A complete tech pack typically includes:

  • Spec sheet / POM (points of measure) — exact measurements for every part of the garment across the full size range

  • BOM (bill of materials) — every fabric, trim, thread, label and component used, with supplier or reference detail where known

Fabric and trim sourcing usually starts with requesting swatches from mills or suppliers so fibre content, weight and hand feel can be assessed physically rather than guessed from a spec sheet, since a fabric described identically on paper can feel completely different depending on the mill producing it. This is also the stage to confirm minimum order quantities on fabric itself, which can be separate from the garment manufacturer's MOQ.

Manufacturer sourcing is one of the most consequential relationships a brand will build. A few things are worth vetting properly before committing:

  • Request references or existing samples of their work, ideally in a similar garment category to yours

  • Confirm their MOQ, or minimum order quantity, which is typically calculated per style, per colour rather than as one combined total across a style. If a factory's MOQ is 150 units per colourway and you want two colours, expect a minimum order of 300 units total, not 150 split across both

  • Understand their standard lead times, payment structure and communication process before committing

  • Where realistic, an in-person or third-party factory visit or audit is the most reliable way to assess working conditions and production standards, though this isn't always feasible for smaller first orders

The choice between a domestic and an overseas manufacturer involves real trade-offs that vary significantly by country, garment type and order volume. Domestic production generally offers easier communication, shorter shipping lead times and simpler quality oversight, usually at a higher per-unit cost and often with higher MOQs relative to smaller regional factories. Overseas production can offer lower per-unit costs and, in many cases, lower MOQs, at the cost of longer lead times, more complex logistics, and quality control that has to be managed more deliberately since you can't simply visit the factory floor. Neither option is universally correct, the right choice depends on your capital, timeline and how hands-on you're able to be with oversight.

07 - Sampling & Fit Development

Sampling is where the tech pack gets tested against reality, and it typically happens in stages rather than as a single pass.

  • Proto sample (first sample) — the manufacturer's first attempt at building the garment from your tech pack, used to assess construction and rough fit before investing further

  • Fit sample(s) — revised versions produced after fit sessions, where the garment is tried on (ideally on a fit model matching your target size) and adjustments are marked and sent back for correction

  • Size set — samples produced across the full size range to confirm that grading, the process of scaling the base pattern up and down consistently, is working correctly and every size fits proportionally as intended

  • PP sample (pre-production sample) — the final sample, made using the actual bulk fabric and trims, that gets formally approved before the factory is authorised to cut the bulk order

It's common to go through several rounds of fit revisions before a garment is right, and that's a normal part of the process rather than a sign something has gone wrong. 08 - Costing & Pricing the Collection

  2. Landed cost — unit cost plus freight and any import duties or taxes, which vary substantially by country, shipping method and product classification, so this is worth confirming with a freight forwarder or customs broker rather than estimating

  3. Wholesale or retail price — the landed cost with your intended margin applied on top

As a rough frame of reference, cut & sew bulk production commonly runs anywhere from six to twelve weeks once fabric is in hand, while print-on-blank customisation runs considerably faster since the base garment doesn't need to be constructed from scratch. Staying in contact during production, particularly around key checkpoints like fabric cutting and mid-production, gives you the opportunity to catch and correct issues before the full order is complete rather than discovering a problem only once everything has shipped.

10 - Quality Control

Quality control is the final checkpoint before a collection reaches customers, and it should be performed by the brand itself rather than left entirely to the manufacturer, who has less incentive to catch every flaw than the brand whose name is actually on the garment.

A proper QC pass covers several categories:

  • Technical accuracy — measurements checked against the original spec sheet and consistent sizing across the run
