Technical design & fit
Measure garments against your point of measure (POM) sheet across multiple sizes, not just one, since sizing inconsistency across a size run is one of the most common and most damaging defects. Check that design details specified in the tech pack, such as darts, pleats, linings or specific closures, have actually been included and constructed correctly. Where possible, try the garment on a body or form rather than relying on flat measurements alone, since a garment can measure correctly on paper and still fit poorly.
Fabric & materials

UNDERSTANDING AQL: HOW MANY GARMENTS YOU ACTUALLY NEED TO CHECK
One of the most common questions from first-time brand founders is whether every single garment in an order needs to be inspected individually. In most cases, the answer is no, and this is where Acceptable Quality Limit (AQL) sampling comes in. AQL is an internationally recognised statistical sampling standard (based on ISO 2859-1) used across manufacturing industries, including apparel, to determine how many units from a batch need to be checked in order to reliably represent the quality of the whole order, without the time and cost of a 100% inspection.
Rather than checking every unit, you select a sample size based on your total order quantity, using a standardised sampling table. AQL 2.5 is the most commonly used level for general apparel, meaning you're accepting that a small percentage of minor defects is realistic and tolerable, while critical and major defects are held to a much stricter threshold.

How many garments should you inspect?
The exact sample size depends on your total order quantity and the AQL level and inspection rigour you choose, and this is typically calculated using a standard sampling table (such as ANSI/ASQ Z1.4) rather than an arbitrary percentage. As a general point of reference, a batch of a few hundred units might require a sample of several dozen pieces to be inspected, while much larger orders require a larger sample but represent a smaller percentage of the total. If you're working with a third-party inspection agency, they will calculate this for you based on your order size and chosen AQL level.
It's worth noting that AQL sampling assumes a reasonably well-run factory to begin with. If you have any reason to distrust a manufacturer's consistency, either from a previous experience or a lack of established relationship, increasing your sample size or inspecting 100% of a smaller order is a reasonable and often worthwhile decision.

These are independent companies who send a trained inspector to the factory on your behalf, following your specification sheet and AQL requirements, and provide a detailed report with photos before your order ships.
Do you need a third-party inspection agency as a small brand?
Not always, but it's worth considering seriously if any of the following apply: you're producing with an overseas manufacturer you haven't worked with before, your order quantity is large enough that a defect issue would be financially significant, or you simply don't have the time or logistical ability to inspect the order yourself before it ships. Third-party inspection agencies typically charge a day rate that can vary considerably depending on the country and scope of inspection, so it's worth requesting quotes directly from a few agencies rather than assuming a fixed cost, since pricing varies significantly by region and by how many inspectors and days the job requires. For many startup brands, the cost of a single day's inspection is small relative to the cost of an entire production run going out with an undetected defect.
COMMON QUALITY CONTROL MISTAKES STARTUP BRANDS MAKE
Relying entirely on the factory's own QC. Manufacturers often have their own internal quality checks, but it's not their brand name on the label, and their definition of "acceptable" won't always match yours. Always perform your own inspection, even if the factory has already signed off on the order.
Only inspecting at the very end. Waiting until the entire order is complete to check quality means any systemic issue has already been repeated across the full run. Building in a pre-production and, where relevant, an inline check significantly reduces this risk.

TURNING QC INTO A REPEATABLE PROCESS FOR EVERY COLLECTION
The brands that manage quality control well don't treat it as a one-off task for a single collection, they build a standardised checklist and process that gets reused and refined every time they go into production. Once you've built a solid QC checklist based on your tech pack categories, keep it as a living document and adjust it based on issues you encounter, so each collection benefits from what you learned on the last one.
