what is moq?

MOQ or Minimum Order Quantity is a frequently used term in the fashion industry by suppliers, factories / manufacturers, design houses, fabric mills, etc.

Minimum Order Quantity simply means the minimum amount of product that you must order from a specific supplier in order to meet their minimums for production.

Typically, when a garment manufacturer uses the term MOQ it refers to “per color - per style” meaning a certain number of a single garment style in a single color is necessary to produce.

Example : You want to produce 200 tee shirts total, 100 in heather grey & 100 in vintage black.

However, your production partner has an MOQ of 150 pieces per color - per style, this means you will have to produce a minimum of 150 heather grey tee shirts and 150 in vintage black, bringing your total volume to 300 pieces.

With that being said, often times suppliers are willing to negotiate a split between colors of the same style, especially if you are producing more than one style of garment with them.

The reason for these minimums on the supplier side is to make sure they are hitting their target numbers in volume to make it worth the time & resources which they will put into production.

Remember to always keep your order quantities low in the begging stages, and politely negotiate as best you can using methods such as color splitting for each style.
