3. WHAT'S INCLUDED IN A TECH PACK

The front page of each style's tech pack, including the style name & number, season, brand name, a short design description & a reference image or mood image of the garment concept.
Technical Flat Sketches (CADs)
Flat, proportionally accurate line drawings of the garment shown from the front & back (and sometimes side), without a body inside them. These are not fashion illustrations, they are technical drawings intended to show every seam, stitch line, pocket, closure & design detail clearly & accurately.
Measurement Specification (Points of Measure)

Grading
Grading takes the base size measurement spec and calculates how each measurement should increase or decrease across your full size range, ensuring consistent fit & proportion from your smallest to largest size offering.
Bill of Materials (BOM)
A full list of every material used to construct the garment, including fabric composition & weight (GSM), all trims such as zippers, buttons, drawcords & elastic, and any interfacing or lining. Each material should reference an approved supplier & article code where possible.
Colourways
A breakdown of every colour combination the style will be produced in, including exact fabric colour references (such as Pantone codes) for each colourway.
Construction & Stitch Details

5. HOW TO CREATE A TECH PACK
Building a tech pack is a layered process, and it's rarely finished in one sitting, it typically evolves alongside your design & sampling process. A practical approach looks like this :
Finalise your design concept and produce clean, proportionally accurate flat sketches for front & back views.
Draft your initial measurement specification, either by taking a well fitting reference garment and measuring it flat, or by working with a pattern maker to build a spec from scratch.
Confirm your fabric, trims & materials, and document exact composition, weight & supplier references in your bill of materials.
Add full construction detail, including seam types, stitching & any specific techniques the factory needs to replicate.
Include labelling, packaging & compliance information relevant to your target market.
Send the completed tech pack to your chosen factory for costing & sample development, and use the revision history to track any changes requested after reviewing the first sample.

6. TECH PACKS FOR PRINT ON BLANK VS. CUT & SEW
The depth of tech pack you need depends heavily on your production method.
If you're working with print on blank production, your garment construction, fit & materials are already fixed by the blank supplier, so your tech pack requirement is much lighter. In this case, you mainly need a clear placement sheet detailing embellishment size, position & colour for each garment & size, along with labelling specification.
If you're producing cut & sew, a full tech pack covering every section outlined above is essential. Every construction decision is being made from scratch, so there is no fallback specification for the factory to rely on if your documentation is incomplete.
7. COMMON TECH PACK MISTAKES THAT COST YOU TIME & MONEY
Missing tolerance ranges on measurements, leaving the factory to decide how much variance is acceptable, which often differs from your expectation.
Inconsistent units, mixing centimetres & inches across different pages of the same tech pack, causing confusion during pattern drafting.

Do I need a tech pack if I'm using print on demand or blanks?
You still need a lightweight version covering placement, sizing & labelling, but you don't need the full construction, pattern & materials documentation required for cut & sew, as this is already determined by the blank supplier.
How many pages should a tech pack have?
This varies by garment complexity, a simple t-shirt might only need 4-6 pages, while a technical outerwear piece with multiple components could run to 15-20 pages or more.
Can I build my own tech pack without a fashion design background?
